Yesterday, ZIM Integrated Shipping Services Ltd., the ninth-largest shipping company globally, announced its decision to join the cross-industry initiative, the "Move to -15" alliance.
The "Move to -15" alliance aims to reduce emissions in the cold chain sector by adjusting the standard temperature for refrigerated cargo from -18°C to -15°C. This seemingly small change has the potential to prevent an estimated 17.7 million metric tons of emissions annually.
With its advanced fleet of refrigerated containers and proprietary ZIMonitor service, ZIM will provide real-time monitoring to ensure optimal cold chain conditions are maintained.
David Arbel, ZIM’s Executive Vice President and COO, stated: "As part of ZIM's ESG commitment, we are advancing sustainable, cutting-edge solutions to reduce the environmental impact of global shipping. We are proud to join this alliance, making cold chain logistics greener and more cost-effective."
The "Move to -15" alliance was launched by key partners, including global logistics leader DP World, during COP28. Its mission is to explore the feasibility of moving the standard temperature to -15°C, a change that requires collective effort from across the industry.
Since its inception, the alliance has gained support from leading companies in shipping, logistics, and trade, including:
- A.P. Moller-Maersk
- DP World
- AJC Group
- Lineage Logistics
- Daikin
- COSCO Shipping
- Holt Logistics
- JB Hunt
- Americold
- Indicold
- Orbcomm
